Ice Flowers and Other Frozen Beauties

Thursday                                            LE192243

10:30-11:30

May 16, 23

Instructor(s): Jim Carter

It is time to consider what you can do this summer to have interesting formations of ice when the temperatures drop next winter. Ice flowers appear on the stems of certain plants in your garden, and you may find needles of ice in the soil. In 2003 the instructor found ice flowers on native plants in East Tennessee. He brought plants into his yard only to find that he had ice flowers growing there already. He never looked before. He put some photos on the web and soon was hearing from people around the world showing what they found and asking for explanations. Ice occurs in many places in nature and in many cases the display of ice is very attractive and quite unusual. He has tried to understand all that he has been introduced to. As such he has many interesting photos to show and stories to tell as he tries to explain how and why. And at least two poems have been written extoling the beauty of Ice Flowers. For a sneak preview, see: http://my.ilstu.edu/~jrcarter/ice/radio/.
