Virginia Beach Tour

September 22

Course:  SE173115

Virginia Beach may be famous for their bright, sunny beaches, but it is their museums and history - that’s where they really shine. On this exciting day tour to Virginia’s coast, you will discover that you don’t need a bathing suit to enjoy the wonderful attractions Virginia Beach is so proud to provide. Once arriving in Virginia Beach we’ll visit the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse.  It is located on Fort Story Army Base on a bluff above the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.  This lighthouse was the first public building authorized by the new US Congress in 1789. It was also the first lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay and was constructed with stone from quarries that provided stone for the Capitol, White House and Mount Vernon. It is a registered National Historic Landmark and serves as the official symbol for the City of Virginia Beach.  There will be great photo opportunities here, and the ambitious may pay the small fee to go inside and climb the 191 steps to the top.    We’ll also visit First Landing Cross.  Upon touching the shore of the New World on April 26, 1607 (13 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock) the first permanent English settlers from the London Company set up a cross on the newly named Cape Henry (after Henry, Prince of Wales) shore in gratitude to God and to affirm England's claim to the site. These settlers later traveled up the James River to Jamestown. The present-day granite cross was erected in 1935 and is a national landmark. PLEASE BRING PHOTO ID SINCE ENTERING AN ARMY BASE. Next, you’ll travel into the popular Boardwalk area of Virginia Beach for a delicious lunch at Waterman’s Surfside Grille, located on the Boardwalk with Ocean views. You will choose from Chesapeake Bay Crabcakes (two premium lump crabcakes), Miso Salmon (fresh Atlantic Salmon brushed with miso glaze and broiled) or Ginger Soy Grilled Chicken.  Each entree is served with starch and vegetable, Caesar Salad, homemade Key Lime Pie with cinnamon graham crust, and iced tea or soda. You’ll have time after lunch to take a stroll out on the beach and dip your toes in the Atlantic. In the afternoon, enjoy time on your own at the Virginia Aquarium.  Here you can explore over 800,000 gallons of one of the best aquariums and live animal habitats in the country - offering hundreds of hands-on exhibits. From the rivers to the Chesapeake Bay and finally, into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, this journey of water through Virginia introduces you to the many aquatic animals and plants that are native to the state. See the largest collection of Chesapeake Bay fishes and meet a horseshoe crab at the Chesapeake Bay touch pool. Your Trip fee provides: Round Trip Motorcoach Transportation, Lunch at Waterman’s Surfside Grille, Admission at the Virginia Aquarium, All Tax and Gratuity for Lunch, Refreshments aboard the Coach, and Driver Gratuity.

The LLI Senior Storytelling Slam: New Words from Old Mouths

Tuesday                                         SE173110

Sept 12, Oct 10, Nov 14, Dec 12

Instructor(s): Les Schaffer

Story Slams are growing in popularity across the world. Based on the poetry slam format and similar to popular radio shows like NPR's "The Moth" or "This American Life", a story slam is a festival for the spoken word. LLI story-slammers can register to sign up to tell a short story on the day's theme. Stories may be no longer than eight minutes. Up to seven story-slammers will be selected from those registered for each starting line-up. At the live shows (see schedule), as time permits, procrastinators or late starters may put their names in a hat to be selected to tell. The theme for this season's first Slam is “School Daze: Stories about School Misadventures”. Slammers may broadly define this topic, with the caveat that it must be mostly true, at least in the teller's mind. No notes, paper or cheat sheets allowed during the live performance. The audience will be expecting real-life adventures. The best stories have a beginning, middle and end. They have a point and should be clear about why it's important for you to tell. You'll have an opportunity to tell your story to a friendly, live audience of fellow LLI members. Les Schaffer will serve as the Slam MC and be available for phone or electronic consultation and coaching as you develop and polish your story. Students who plan to slam and students who plan to be in the audience should both register.
