National D-Day Memorial Tour

September 28

Course:  SE183127

Join your LLI friends for this early fall excursion towards the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia! We have included two historic sites and a delicious lunch, so don’t miss out! In the morning, enjoy a guided tour through the National D-Day Memorial which is, without question, one of the most awe-inspiring memorials ever created.   A centerpiece of the 88 acres site is the massive Overlord arch rising above Victory Plaza. Its massive arch stands high on a hill overlooking the City of Bedford. Bedford was selected for this honor because it sustained the highest, per capita, loss of lives during the D-Day invasion.  The Virginia Unit from Bedford was the only National Guard contingent to land in the first wave on D-Day; all others were regular Army units comprised of recruits from across the United States. The men from Virginia who landed together suffered devastating casualties and the Commonwealth endured devastating losses.  The memorial is laid out to show the progression of this historic event - from the reflecting pool that represents the crossing of the channel to the Victory Plaza (which contains a wall and sculptures of soldiers) that represents the landing on the beaches of Normandy and climbing the cliffs to victory. This memorial is designed to help you remember their valor, fidelity, and sacrifice - a truly moving experience. Next, travel back east along 460 towards Lynchburg for a great lunch at the Spring House Restaurant. Lunch will be served family style with several entrees, 5 sides, dessert and a beverage. Continuing east, spend the afternoon at the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park.  On April 9, 1865, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, signaled the end of the nation's largest war. Two important questions about its future were answered. Could the nation survive a civil war intact, and would that nation exist without slavery? The answer to both was yes, and a new nation was born. See the McLean House and the impressive visitor center and take part in a Ranger Talk.  Trip Fee Includes: Round Trip Motorcoach Transportation, Admission to the D-Day Memorial, Lunch at Spring House Restaurant, All Taxes and Gratuities, Refreshments en route home, and Driver Gratuity.

Fashion Forward: From the Inside Out

Friday                                  SE183123

Nov 9

Instructor(s): Linda Rubin

This course provides students with an innovative, hands-on experience inspired by Family Feud! It is engaging, entertaining, and imparts a lot of information that can be used right away to Fashion Yourself Forward from the inside out. From a discussion of the Law of Attraction to how to dress for individual body shapes, this is a powerful experience. Four students are arranged into two teams of two players in the game with the remainder of students as the audience. Topics are presented as lessons via PowerPoint and many are followed by a question for teams to respond, reinforcing the lesson. The team that answers a question correctly is rewarded play money and the challenge continues, gaining momentum. The audience also participates, too. The team that answers the most correct answers chooses one person to receive a complete makeover and color draping for all to witness.
